Typing Jobs from Home

I put typing jobs from home separate from writing. To me, writing and typing are two very different things.

Writing typically requires creativity and planning, where typing is more task-oriented.

If you’re a fast typer and have a reliable computer, here are some typing jobs you may want to explore.

Transcribing Work

Transcribe audio into a typed document. Many businesses use transcription services, and it’s often a work-at-home opportunity.

Medical transcription is probably the most common, but there are many other transcription jobs, as well.

You can offer your transcription services as a freelancer, or look for employment positions.

If you want to sprinkle in transcribing as an additional income stream, you can grab one-off gigs when it’s convenient for you.

  • Investment: Time, Money for equipment if needed.
  • Equipment: Reliable computer, headphones, optional foot pedal.
  • Skills: Listening, typing, attention to detail.
  • Income: Active income. Paid per hour, per gig, or possible salary position.

Captioning Work

Ever wonder who does the closed captioning on the videos and movies you watch? Often, it’s people from home!

I never gave this much thought before even though we are a household who uses closed captioning. I think I thought it was computer generated. But, nope.

Captioning is a job people can do from home.

My sister and I both belong to a site that pays for captioning. As beginners, the pay is LOW, but they do pay.

No matter how little you make in a week, you receive payment via Paypal every Monday.

After you gain experience, speed, and accuracy, your pay increases. I personally find captioning videos both fun and horrifying at the same time.

Sometimes it’s challenging, but nice to have the option. If it’s between watching cat videos and captioning a video, at least one of those options earns a few bucks.

  • Investment: Time, Money for equipment if needed.
  • Equipment: Reliable computer, headphones, optional foot pedal.
  • Skills: Listening, typing, excellent grammar and spelling, attention to detail.
  • Income: Active income. Paid per audio minute.

Data Entry Work

Data entry is a pretty broad term. Simply put, data entry is inputting information into a company’s system.

It’s typically considered easy work, which also means it’s generally low-paying work.

I feel like I should know a lot more about data entry, but I’ve never done it. I’ll update this post as I have more helpful info.

  • Investment: Time, Money for equipment if needed.
  • Equipment: Reliable computer.
  • Skills: Organization, typing, attention to detail, know how to use Excel, Google docs, and other office software.
  • Income: Active income. Paid hourly.

Customer Service Chat Agent

Many companies now use chat for customer service. If you’re trying to avoid the phone calls traditional customer service requires, look into working as a chat agent.

Of course, you will need knowledge about the company and might require training.

You’ll need to know how to answer questions and help people via chat.

Patience and strong typing skills are a must.

Another job I’ll loop into this is that of a moderator. Moderate forums and chat rooms to weed out trolls and diffuse arguments.

If you have a good eye and great people skills, look into working as an online moderator.

  • Investment: Time, Money for equipment if needed.
  • Equipment: Reliable computer.
  • Skills: Typing, grammar, patience, problem-solving, attention to detail.
  • Income: Active income. Paid hourly.

There’s another area of chat work for adults that I may or may not include eventually. I need to learn more about it first.

One word of caution – please be careful of scam sites. You should never have to pay money to work.

If a website charges you a fee to work for them (??), get the heck out of there.

Do you know of any good typing jobs to do from home?

I’d love to hear your experiences.
